Why Join a Grower Peer Group?

Being a farmer has its challenges. Any business owner faces challenges, but most of them have at least one, if not a team of people to share those challenges with and come up with solutions. Farmers, on the other hand, can feel like they are on an island with no one to share their thoughts with. Many farmers don't feel comfortable sharing their challenges or successes with their neighbors because of their competitive nature, independent mindset or concern about confidentiality. Farmers invest a tremendous amount of time and money to maintain or grow their business, but because they spend so much time “working in the business”, they sacrifice time “working on the business”. It is important to set aside time to focus on increasing efficiency, reducing costs and increasing yields, especially now when margins are so tight. A Grower Peer Group may just be the thing that you are looking for.

HTS Ag is forming Grower Peer Groups to provide a forum for open sharing. These groups are made up of like-minded growers who meet quarterly in a non-competitive environment to network and discuss issues specific to each member's concerns. These members are serious about implementing a model for success in their business through collaboration and sharing best practices. These groups provide opportunities to share, learn and grow with other producers that are not competitors. Joining a peer group is an effective way for farmers to share in confidence and sharpen personal and business skills.

Some good questions to ask yourself to see if you would benefit from joining a peer group:
  • Do you want to grow your business: acres/revenue/profit margin/head of livestock?
  • What advantage would there be to have a half-dozen or so top-notch producers that are not your neighbors, to bounce ideas off of and get feedback from?
  • What value would there be in hearing best practice ideas from several other successful producers each quarter?
  • Is there room for improvement in your marketing, business management, leadership, financial management, employee management, agronomic skills?
  • Is or will your business be in a generational succession/transition?
